TikTok Buy Direct for retailers: UCP checkout, Shopping Assistant and what to prepare
TikTok's Buy Direct checkout needs a Universal Commerce Protocol integration. What it is, who can get it, how Shopping Assistant differs and what to check.

Direct answer: Buy Direct is TikTok's new in-app checkout. A shopper who sees your product in an ad or the For You feed can buy it from you in one click, using a stored card and address, without leaving TikTok. You stay Merchant of Record. TikTok says it "requires an integration with Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)". For now it is a test for selected advertisers, run through TikTok's sales teams. Two things decide whether you can take part when it reaches you. One is your commerce platform's UCP support. The other is whether your catalogue, prices and checkout hold up when a machine reads them.
This guide is for ecommerce directors, heads of digital and engineering leads. It covers what TikTok announced, how Buy Direct differs from Shopping Assistant and TikTok Shop, what UCP asks of your store, what we found when we fetched the UCP profiles of the 225 retailers in our Agent Commerce Index, and what to do this week.
Last verified: 28 October 2026 against TikTok's newsroom and business blog, Salesforce's announcement, Shopify's developer changelog and Help Center, and the UCP specification (version 2026-08-25). TikTok has not published technical documentation for Buy Direct, so check the current versions before you plan work.
What TikTok announced
On 5 October 2026, at Advertising Week New York, TikTok announced a set of AI tools for advertisers. Two of them concern retail:
- Buy Direct, "a seamless in-app checkout solution that allows users to make purchases directly from a brand, without leaving TikTok", including "directly from the For You feed with just one click".
- Shopping Assistant, a conversational AI agent that answers shoppers' questions about product details, shipping, sizing and availability, and helps them buy.
TikTok's business blog post of the same day sets out the practical details:
- These are advertising products. TikTok presents both as ad solutions. Access is through "eligibility-based testing opportunities", and advertisers are told to contact their TikTok sales partner.
- You remain Merchant of Record. TikTok says brands keep that role for Buy Direct transactions.
- UCP is a requirement. "Buy Direct requires an integration with Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)." TikTok names Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe "and more" as partners.
- No figures. The blog says brands "see improved conversion rates" but publishes no numbers. It names no markets, launch dates or fees.
Adweek reported that buying direct works separately from TikTok Shop and was "now beginning to roll out to users and brands in the U.S." That comes from Adweek, not from a TikTok document.
Buy Direct and Shopping Assistant compared
| Shopping Assistant | Buy Direct | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the shopper buys | Your own checkout, in TikTok's in-app browser | TikTok's native checkout |
| Merchant of Record | You (it is your checkout) | You, according to TikTok |
| What connects your store | "Information provided by the merchant" (TikTok has not said in what form; Salesforce describes sending your catalogue) | A UCP integration |
| Payment and address | Whatever your checkout collects | Stored payment methods and saved addresses |
| Access as of 28 October 2026 | Eligibility-based testing via TikTok sales | Eligibility-based testing via TikTok sales |
Neither is TikTok Shop. Adweek describes buying direct from brands as separate from TikTok Shop, and Salesforce sells its TikTok Shop and Buy Direct integrations as two different products.
The two new tools are aimed at the same leak. A shopper sees a product in a video, wants to know something or wants to buy, and drops out on the way to your site. Shopping Assistant keeps the conversation on TikTok and hands over to your checkout. Buy Direct removes the hand-over.
What the platform partners have said
- Salesforce. Salesforce's announcement says its native UCP integration "will allow Commerce Cloud customers to support a frictionless checkout through TikTok's Buy Direct ads while remaining the merchant of record". It also offers enterprise brands "a central place to send your catalog to support TikTok's Shopping Assistant". It says "the phased rollout for these new UCP-powered experiences is expected to begin in Q1 2027". Its separate TikTok Shop integration is due to be generally available in January 2027.
- Shopify. TikTok names Shopify as a partner. Shopify's developer changelog says its storefronts advertise UCP version 2026-08-25 at
/.well-known/ucp. Shopify's agentic storefronts help page still lists ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta as channels, and does not mention TikTok. We found no Shopify page on Buy Direct as of 28 October. - Stripe and Shoplazza. Both are named by TikTok. We found no Stripe or Shoplazza documentation on Buy Direct as of 28 October.
If your platform is none of these, ask your platform account manager whether a UCP integration with TikTok is on its roadmap. TikTok's "and more" suggests other partners, but it has not named them.
What UCP asks of your store
UCP is an open protocol that lets an agent, or a platform such as TikTok, find out what your store supports and then carry out shopping tasks with it. The specification starts with a business profile at /.well-known/ucp on your domain. The profile declares:
- a UCP version (required)
- the services you offer and how to reach them (required). The spec defines REST, MCP, A2A and embedded transports.
- payment handlers, the payment methods a platform can use with you (required)
- capabilities, such as
dev.ucp.shopping.checkoutanddev.ucp.shopping.cart
The hosting rules are strict. Profiles must be served over HTTPS and "MUST NOT use redirects (3xx)". They must carry a Cache-Control header with public and a max-age of at least 60 seconds, and must not be served as private, no-store or no-cache. A platform that follows the spec will not follow a redirect to find your profile.
UCP's Embedded Protocol lets a host show the business's own checkout inside an iframe or webview. In that case the business must allow the host's origin in its Content Security Policy frame-ancestors. TikTok has not said whether Buy Direct uses the embedded transport, a server-side API or both. Treat any claim about how it works under the hood as unconfirmed until TikTok or your platform documents it.
A profile is a precondition, not an integration. Publishing one does not enrol you in Buy Direct, and TikTok decides eligibility. A profile that is missing, redirected or uncached is still an easy reason to fail when a platform checks you.
What we found in the Index
On 28 October 2026 we fetched /.well-known/ucp for the 225 scored retailers in the Agent Commerce Index Q4 2026. We counted a profile when it returned JSON with the version, services and payment_handlers fields the spec requires. This was not a full schema validation.
| Platform (Index data) | Retailers | Returned a UCP profile |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify | 129 | 115 |
| Salesforce Commerce Cloud | 26 | 1 |
| Magento / Adobe Commerce | 9 | 0 |
| BigCommerce | 3 | 2 |
| Platform not identified | 58 | 3 |
| All scored retailers | 225 | 121 |
Of the 121 profiles:
- 120 declare the checkout capability and 119 declare cart
- 114 declare version 2026-08-25, six declare 2026-04-08 and one declares 2026-01-23
- 118 declare an MCP transport, 116 an embedded transport and 5 REST
- 115 list Google Pay as a payment handler and 114 list Shop Pay
- 1 was reachable only through a redirect, which the spec does not allow
- 5 of the 120 served directly lacked the required
Cache-Control(two Shopify stores sentmax-age=0, two sent no header and one omittedpublic)
The pattern follows the platform. Shopify storefronts advertise a profile by default, and nearly every Shopify store in the Index serves one. Shopify has not said how its TikTok integration will work, so a profile is not the same as Buy Direct readiness. Fourteen Shopify stores did not return a profile. Ten returned 404, and we did not investigate why. On Salesforce Commerce Cloud, which has announced Buy Direct support for Q1 2027, only one of the 26 Index retailers serves a profile today. We did not check which retailers advertise on TikTok or are in TikTok's tests, because that is not public.
What to do this week
- Ask TikTok and your platform the same three questions. If you advertise on TikTok, ask your sales partner whether you are eligible for Buy Direct or Shopping Assistant tests, in which markets, and on what terms. Ask your commerce platform when its TikTok UCP integration ships and what it needs from you.
- Fetch your own UCP profile. Request
https://yourdomain/.well-known/ucpwithout following redirects. Check that it returns 200, valid JSON and aCache-Control: public, max-age=60or longer, and that it declares checkout. This is check TRX-04 in our score. - Make the price and policies machine-readable. A native checkout and a chat assistant both depend on what you supply. Put price, availability, shipping cost and returns terms in your product data and structured data, and keep them in line with checkout. Product structured data for AI agents shows how.
- Test your checkout inside an in-app browser. Shopping Assistant hands shoppers to your own checkout in TikTok's in-app browser. Open a product link from TikTok on a phone and buy as a guest. Look for forced sign-in, failed payment buttons, bot challenges and consent banners that block the page.
- Plan for the operations. As Merchant of Record you own the order, customer service and returns. Agree with your platform how TikTok orders are tagged and reported before the volume arrives.
- Do not block what you want to sell through. Check your CDN and bot rules let platforms reach your UCP profile and cart. Are you blocking AI shopping agents? covers the settings.
For the same pattern on other platforms, see Google Universal Cart for retailers, which also runs on UCP, and Meta Muse for retailers. To get a baseline for your own store, run the free Agent Conversion Score.

Questions
- What is TikTok Buy Direct?
- Buy Direct is a native checkout inside TikTok, announced on 5 October 2026. TikTok says shoppers can buy from a brand without leaving TikTok, including from the For You feed, with one-click purchase using stored payment methods and saved addresses, and in-app order tracking. The brand remains the Merchant of Record. It is separate from TikTok Shop.
- Does TikTok Buy Direct need UCP?
- Yes. TikTok's business blog says Buy Direct requires an integration with Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), and names Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe among its commerce and payment partners. TikTok has not published technical documentation for the integration, so it is not yet clear which UCP capabilities or transports it uses.
- Can any retailer use Buy Direct now?
- No. As of 28 October 2026 TikTok says its agentic solutions are available through eligibility-based testing, and advertisers should contact their TikTok sales partner. Adweek reported on 5 October that the feature was beginning to roll out to users and brands in the US. Salesforce says the phased rollout for its customers is expected to begin in Q1 2027. TikTok has named no other markets, dates or fees.
- How is Shopping Assistant different from Buy Direct?
- Shopping Assistant is a chat window on the product page in TikTok's in-app browser. It answers shoppers' questions using information provided by the merchant, and the shopper then continues to the merchant's own checkout, still inside the in-app browser. Buy Direct replaces that step with a native TikTok checkout connected to the merchant through UCP.
- Is TikTok Buy Direct the same as TikTok Shop?
- No. Adweek describes buying direct from brands as separate from TikTok Shop, and TikTok's blog says the brand stays Merchant of Record for Buy Direct. Salesforce lists its TikTok Shop integration (generally available in January 2027) and its Buy Direct UCP integration as two different products.
